ALTARS/ON SURRENDERING (2024)
abolition is a practice of surrendering;
surrender, as the being of water, coming of spring, embrace of the night,
a shapeless, shaping agency we can cultivate in trust.

Altars took place in the sacred gardens of the Joy Project in August of 2024.
The space was set up with fabric prints designed for
the occassion, framed in branches to surrender into the winds.
The prints offered images of earthen wisdom and queer kin, while the community brought food, cushions, blankets, books to collectively nourish the space.
I opened the space with an hour long exercise on listening to and expressing the patterns, relations of surrendering taking shape in the garden around us.
The event then unfolded into an open mic, which carried on until late evening, when we collectively decided it was time to leave the grounds.
